Although Superman, that strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers superior to those of mortal men, was a star of comic books, newspaper strips, and animated cartoons, by 1948, he had never appeared in a live-action film. That all changed when the energetic and charismatic Kirk Alyn brought him to life on the big screen in the form of a serial. Superman would become one of Columbia's biggest successes and spawned not only the inevitable sequel but also the popular TV series.
