William Williams, also known as William Williams of Plymouth, was a distinguished 19th century English artist who lived in Plymouth England and known for his river scenes, landscapes and coastal scenes such as this exceptional work. From its serpentine footpath and river, to its captivating contrasts of terrain, and its central anchoring tree (“a balance of imbalances” in earth, water & sky), and its overall organic nature, executed in oil on canvas this landscape scene is absolutely phenomenal; far exceeding the majority of his works that have come to auction in the last decade.
