EARLY 19th CENTURY HAND-COLORED & PERSONALIZED MOURNING LITHOGRAPH

AMERICAN FOLK ART, 1833

Hand-Colored Lithograph on Paper in original period frame

Size: 12.75 x 14.75; 32.4 x 37.5 cm

Excellent example of an early hand-colored lithographic mourning picture, only-then beginning to come into common use with parallel technological developments of printing in the industrial revolution.

The present work depicts a young couple visiting a grave topped with neoclassical urn, and is hand-lettered/personalized in memory of one, Fanny C. King who died at the age of 43 in January 1833, a victim of the contagion of consumption (tuberculosis), named for the way it appeared to “consume” the body of the affected individuals, and which was, by far, the leading cause of mortality in the 19th century.
