MOURNING PORTRAIT OF A DEPARTED SIBLING
ANONYMOUS
MID-19th CENTURY
Oil Painting on Canvas
Size: 28.0 x 36.0 in; 71.12 x 91.44 cm
Artful masterwork by an anonymous French or German artist, artfully and poetically representing love, the transience of life, and of the metaphysical distance between the realms of being and eternity. In the present work the departed youngest sibling is pictured at right, and whose angel-like wicker chair “wings” reveals her new heavenly status, as does her dress of cooler colors, starkly contrasting with her older brother and sisters' warmer-colored clothing, and their more ruddy complexions. Originally part of this tight-knit family, group, the little girl's absence is symbolically delineated by her head which, if shifted to the left, would fit precisely within the negative “heart' space in-between the boy and taller girl's heads, cleverly simultaneously emphasizing her absence and her sibling's feeling of love and loss.
