THE PREGNANT BRIDE
ANONYMOUS
MID-19th CENTURY
Oil Painting on Canvas
Size: 27.5 x 35.75 in; 69.85 x 90.81 cm
A tour de force of 19th forensics from an anonymous (probably) Danish artist. The scene depicted is all about fertility, and the new bride's delicate condition is revealed by several clues: from her introspective mirror reflection, to the scene's five women and their corresponding positions as candelabra candles (in various states of ignition, depending on the women's ages), to the jewelry box loaded with precious its cargo, and finally, to the traditional fertility symbols of a vase of flowers and bowl of fruit, where, if one connects them by drawing a diagonal straight line from upper left to bottom right, is bisected by the bride's womb.
