Oil Painting on Canvas, Late 19th century

The following typewritten peiod documentation was attached to the verso of the painting at time of purchase: ““Loves Lips” by Jules Emery. French (1852-1918 ). From the estate of the late Rodman Wanamaker. This lovely canvas, depicts Cupid kissing a maiden [Venus] about whose shoulders entwines a veil; in the background, a loosely painted bower of trees merging into a blue sky. The canvas, it is understood, was painted in 1912, and is one of the very fine works of this French artist who changed the spelling of his name from Emorois, to Emery, when he first made America his home, in 1904. His paintings adorn the galleries of two continents, and are distinguished for the freshness and life of their tonality. This painting had hung in the Boston and Chicago museums.
