Largely monochromatic and playing (and having fun) with the classical Renaissance rules of realist perfection and atmospheric illusion, Garbell presents a contrarian view, democratically equalizing both elements by using only block figures with equal sharpness (and ironically, equivalent ambiguities), and only the suggestion of fore-, middle and background perspective remains by the figures’ relative size differences, suggesting that, unlike virtually everywhere else in everyday experience, the beach is a melting pot where people of all walks of life meet, no matter what their station in life.
