CRUCIFIXION
JULIO GIRONA (1914-2002)
ABSTRACT FIGURATION, Mid 20th Century
Oil on Canvas
An abstract crucified Christ surrounded by universal attributes, masterfully-arranged & confined to a square format
Size: 23.0 x 23 in; 58.42 x 58.42 cm
Signed: Recto, Lower right
A masterwork. In addition to the clever abstract reduction of the bearded central figure itself into a compressed square format, emphasizing the compelling importance of a suffering Christ, as both a simple man and the son of God, by virtue of his suffering, evidenced by the restrained splashes of red. Girona also divides the area external to the figure into 5 key rectangular areas of color, symbolizing the pre-Socratic elemental view of the universe as being composed of (counterclockwise from top left) Air (shown along with symbols of birds), Earth (green grass), Water (a turbulent blue), Fire (lower right), and the aether or void (represented as a blank color field, but with a rectangular splash of red, again symbolic of Christ's sacrifice for the benefit of the world).
