BATMAN SERIAL
BATMAN
GOLDEN AGE OF MOVIE SERIALS, 1949
Original Movie Poster One Sheet
Publisher: Columbia Pictures
Stone Lithograph
The Batman is an odd but fascinating mixture of Batman comic mythos, World War II propaganda and cheaply crafted cliffhanger clichés. Like most all serials of its time, each of serial’s chapters ended with a scene showing our hero facing seemingly inescapable mortal danger. Of course, Batman always managed to escape this danger in the next chapter, but the only way 1940’s moviegoers could know this for sure was to spend their money on a ticket for next week’s show.

This 15-part Columbia serial has the "The Caped Crusaders" expelling Gotham City's notorious villains. Actually, this was the second serial and second screen appearance of Batman and his trusted sidekick, Robin "The Boy Wonder," the first being the 1943 version. This poster is for a single cliff-hanger chapter and features our hero in the insert photo. This serial poster's graphics are some of the best and this chapter is one of the best inset photos of the entire serial.
