Neil O’Brien referred to himself as the creator of "progressive minstrelsy,” and although that might sound a touch oxymoronic, this poster featuring his entire troupe in a far-from non-blackface appearance makes it seem as if O’Brien may have been more interested in quality entertainment than the hootenanny of caricature. He also would appear to have been a shrewd businessman, arranging this endorsement deal with Holtons band instruments (an enterprise based in Elkhorn, Wisconsin), the obvious heart-and-soul of his musical corps
